From Marrakech Airport to the Medina: Your Easy Arrival Guide

Published on 6/3/2026 · 7 min read

The last stretch of a journey is often the one that worries travellers most. You have landed at Marrakech Menara Airport, you can see the palm trees and the red walls of the city in the distance, and somewhere inside the old medina a riad is waiting for you. But how do you actually get there? And once a car drops you off, how do you find a door tucked down a maze of narrow alleys? This guide answers every question, step by step, so the only thing left to feel on arrival is excitement.

Getting from Menara Airport (RAK) to the medina

Marrakech Menara Airport sits remarkably close to the old town — most riads in the medina are only fifteen to twenty minutes away by road. That short distance is part of what makes Marrakech such an easy city to land in.

The option we recommend to every guest is a private airport transfer arranged in advance. We can organise one for 22€ per vehicle, for one to seven passengers, with a driver holding a sign with your name at the arrivals hall. The price is fixed, you skip the queue, and there is no negotiating after a long flight. You can book it through our concierge when you reserve your stay, or anytime on WhatsApp at +212 666 70 88 68. See more on our experiences page.

If you would rather sort transport yourself, the city's official petit taxis (small beige cars) wait outside the terminal. Insist that the driver uses the meter, or agree a price before you set off — a fair fare to the medina edge is usually modest, though rates rise at night. Either way, the drive into town is quick and scenic, skirting the city walls before delivering you to the nearest point a car can reach.

Why cars can't reach the riad door

Here is the single most important thing to understand about staying in the medina, and the part that surprises first-time visitors: no car can drive right up to your riad.

The medina is a UNESCO-listed labyrinth of derbs — pedestrian alleys, many barely wider than your shoulders, that have looked the same for centuries. They were built for people and donkeys, not vehicles. So your taxi or transfer will stop at the closest accessible point, often a small square or a gate, and from there it is a short walk of one to three minutes to our door.

Do not let this put you off. It is exactly what makes a riad special: you step out of the noise and traffic and into a hushed, car-free world of carved doors and bougainvillea. If you have luggage, there is no need to wrestle it through the lanes yourself. A porter can meet you at the drop-off point and carry your bags, and we are always happy to arrange this in advance. Just let us know your arrival time.

How we make sure you find us

Finding an unmarked door in an ancient medina sounds daunting on paper. In practice, we make it simple.

As soon as your booking is confirmed, our team sends you a WhatsApp arrival guide: clear photos of the exact drop-off point, the turn into our derb and our door, plus a GPS pin you can hand straight to your driver. Many guests show the driver the pin and that is the end of the matter. We will also confirm your transfer details and, if you like, have someone meet you at the drop-off point to walk you the final few steps.

You can see exactly where we are and how the approach works on our location page. And if anything ever feels uncertain on the day, one message or call to +212 666 70 88 68 and we will guide you in live, in real time.

Is the Marrakech medina safe?

This is the question we are asked most, and the honest answer is reassuring: the medina is a busy, lived-in neighbourhood and is generally very safe, for solo travellers, couples and families alike. Thousands of people live, work and walk these alleys every day.

As in any popular destination, a little common sense goes a long way. Keep your bag zipped and close in the crush of the souks, be politely firm with anyone offering unsolicited "help" or directions (a confident "no thank you" is enough), and trust your riad rather than strangers for guidance. Pickpocketing is the main thing to guard against; serious crime against visitors is rare. Stick to the main, well-trodden routes, especially at first, and you will feel at ease quickly.

Arriving at night

Plenty of flights land in the evening, and arriving after dark is nothing to worry about. The main routes through the medina and the area around Jemaa el-Fna stay lively and lit well into the night — the square is arguably at its best after sunset.

That said, a few simple steps make a late arrival effortless. Arrange your transfer in advance so a driver is waiting rather than searching for a taxi at midnight. Send us your flight number so we can track your landing and have someone ready at the drop-off point with a light to walk you in. The smaller derbs are quieter at night, which is precisely why having a porter or a member of our team meet you turns a potentially confusing walk into a calm, welcomed one. Whatever the hour, book your stay direct and tell us your arrival time — we plan the rest around you.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the airport transfer?

Our private transfer is 22€ per vehicle, covering one to seven passengers with luggage. The driver waits at arrivals with your name, and the price is fixed in advance — no surprises, no haggling. Arrange it via our concierge or on WhatsApp at +212 666 70 88 68.

Can I just take a taxi or use a ride app?

Yes. Official petit taxis wait outside the terminal; ask for the meter or agree the fare first. Ride-hailing apps have limited and inconsistent availability in Marrakech, so most visitors find a pre-booked private transfer the simplest, most predictable choice.

What if I get lost finding the riad?

You almost certainly won't, thanks to the photo guide and GPS pin we send on booking. But if you do feel turned around, call or message us at +212 666 70 88 68 and we will either talk you in or come and meet you. The medina is small, and you are never far from a landmark.

What about a late or very early check-in?

Just tell us your flight details. We accommodate late arrivals and early landings regularly and will have your room and a warm welcome ready, whatever the hour.

Arriving in Marrakech should feel like the start of the adventure, not an obstacle to clear. With a transfer booked, a pin in your phone and our team on the other end of a message, the journey from the runway to a courtyard full of birdsong is shorter and gentler than you imagine.
